let's see if this does anything [19 Jun 2009|08:01pm]
Like most of you I love love love to see throngs of angry people in the streets shutting down a major city. I have been wondering about why a lot of the Western internet and press reaction to things happening in Tehran makes me kind of sad and dissatisfied. I think part of it is that I have the sense that the enthusiasm we are feeling when we see this stuff is a misplaced desire on our part to see this happening here, in our own towns and cities.

I am struck by a couple of things. One, that the people of Iran who comprise the opposition there do not have at their disposal the human technologies required to change, en masse, the minds and hearts of millions of religious extremists who make it their business to terrorize and murder sinners.

Two, that when you lack the human technologies required to cure millions of people of their religious insanity, freedom from oppressive religious regimes is hardly possible without exodus from the lands controlled by said regimes, or the mass death of those who comprise said regimes.

So Twitter is great but unless Twitter learns to kill people who disagree with you, I think that what we really need to start seeing here is ruthless unrestrained murder on an uncomfortably large scale, or sudden cognitive evolution at a rate that Western thinking generally considers impossible.

I believe in humanity's potential. I think I believe in humanity's potential more than most people do, actually. I guess I want to know how you feel about these statements.

Baggage Gets Stolen [21 Mar 2009|01:29am]
The more weight we give to the rule of the sage, the more we give to the profits of the Big Thieves.  When we give people the standard peck and bushel, we teach them to cheat by the peck and bushel.  When we give the people scales we teach them to cheat with the scale.  When we give them contracts and official seals to bind good faith, we give them contracts and seals to steal with.  And when we force them to reform with benevolence and righteousness, we teach them to steal with benevolence and righteousness.

How do I know?  The man who steals a belt buckle is executed while the man who steals a kingdom becomes a feudal lord.  Within the gates of feudal lords, benevolence and righteousness thrive like babies.  Is this not simply stolen benevolence and righteousness, and isn't this the whole "knowing" of the sage?  The "sage" people are instruments of profit to the state.  They aren't the instruments of the enlightenment of All-Under-Heaven

When you cut loose from the sages, you cut off the Big Thieves.  Throw out your gold!  Smash your pearls!  Then the little thieves can't get started.  Burn your contracts and break your seals, and there will be an end to haggling.  Overthrow the methods produced through the knowledge of the sage and you'll be able to talk common sense to people again.  Mix up the Six Tones.  Destroy decorations, mix the colors, paste Seer's eyes tight shut, and in All-under-heaven they'll begin to see light again.  Destroy the curve-arc and the line, cast out the compass and square, break the fingers of the Craftsman that All-Under-Heaven shall know their own skills again!

All-Under-Heaven will no longer burn.  All-under-heaven will no longer be bound.  All-under-heaven will no longer know doubt.

Methods were useless.

But now something makes the people stretch their necks and raise their heels to stand on tiptoe and cry "Look, there's a worthy expert" and they pack up and hustle off after him.  Thus they cast aside their near and dear and lay aside their duty to their host.  When those above are sincerely addicted to this kind of knowing, they can't know the Tao.  Then All-under-heaven knows the Great Chaos.

How to I know this is so?  The great KNOWING, the technology of bow and crossbow, hooks, lures, nets and weirs, fences, pitfalls, snares and cages throws the wild into chaos.  This KNOWING that creates deceit and poisonous ambiguity, that fiddles endlessly with distinctions about hard, and white, that stirs the dust about same and different - this knowledge is great indeed!  Thus it is in All-under-heaven that they know only to seek after what they do not know.  None of them knows how to seek after what they already know.  They all know to call false anything they take to be good, but they don't know to call false what they take to be good.  And this is the great Chaos.  It blots out the light of sun and moon from above; below, it burns the vital spirit of hill and stream; between, it skews the succession of the seasons.  Crawling bug or fluttering thing, there is none that hasn't already lost its true nature, the heart it was born with.  That's the power of addiction to this KNOWING - it throws All-under-heaven into chaos.  Since the Three Dynasties, it's come down just so.  The people who sow and multiply are set aside, while the lackey flatterer is advanced.  Simplicity and not-doing are abandoned.  What's taken to heart is the song and dance that tumbles All-under-heaven.

Let us agree to retire the phrase "batshit insane" from the common lexicon

It is a wonderful phrase and it has enjoyed a highly successful run since I coined it in 1998 but all good things must come to an end, and this is that end, for this particular phrase.  thank you everyone for participating.

2001 [14 Mar 2009|07:22pm]
I saw 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY last night for the first time ever.

I thought it was really quite good.

I'm glad I waited until just now to see it, I would have probably walked out of it if I'd tried any younger.

We are the very image of a cruel and wasteful diaspora.

Terrible, terrible shames. Sickening how

Let's be honest. Hey, remember that um, Norn? All that upset about LOL, breeding and killing, the socireties and everything you know...

Because catastrophe... DOESN'T WHAT'S THIS DO!

To all: Pay attention! Discern between the capacity to begin, and a wide, private, friends-only dead monster .

Only... if you want your monster medicine license back, much like supervillains, you must teach the world new kinds. Then, though it's only everything you know, in five minutes we should all try it again.

I don't have a phone line. Not sure, though. LOL. Wist. Wist. Wist. Wist. Thanks bung. Hi, I'm theGwiddernTree. The type! The must seem like some! Hmm hmm hmm hrn, seeya.

How would you handle it?

I like what were important,
I guess, back when there

If you train interest, we share.
And worse still, worst of learning how where we go from is paramount,
we have discovered

It is very difficult to come.
We are self altering we,

"How-You-Doin" was rich, it wil be so dead,
you claim to exist and not pay attention?
You lack the capacity to even begin.

Sorry?  Of course he was sorry.  People were always sorry.  Sorry they had done what they had done, sorry they were doing what they were doing, sorry they were going to do what they were going to do; but they still did whatever it was.  The sorrow never stopped them; it just made them feel better.  And so the sorrow never stopped.  Fate, I'm sick of it all.

Sorrow be damned, and all your plans.  Fuck the faithful, fuck the committed, the dedicated, the true believers; fuck all the sure and certain people prepared to maim and kill whoever got in their way; fuck every cause that ended in murder and a child screaming.

i will remember it for you [21 Jan 2009|04:49pm]
Dear Phil, you were right maybe!

love adam

For many months, the GEO600 team-members had been scratching their heads over inexplicable noise that is plaguing their giant detector. Then, out of the blue, a researcher approached them with an explanation. In fact, he had even predicted the noise before he knew they were detecting it. According to Craig Hogan, a physicist at the Fermilab particle physics lab in Batavia, Illinois, GEO600 has stumbled upon the fundamental limit of space-time - the point where space-time stops behaving like the smooth continuum Einstein described and instead dissolves into "grains", just as a newspaper photograph dissolves into dots as you zoom in. "It looks like GEO600 is being buffeted by the microscopic quantum convulsions of space-time," says Hogan.

[16 Dec 2008|05:51pm]
I dreamed I was in an airplane that exploded, sending me flying over the countryside, bouncing and bouncing until I landed in a wrecked heap.

It took me three or four days lying there in incredible pain, I mean it REALLY HURT, until I could start to move... first my arms and legs, then I got to straightening out my spine and finally I could crawl to a walk to get home.

When I got there I let everyone know I'd been in a horrible plane crash, then I started to wonder - why hadn't anyone heard of the plane crash?  It hadn't been on the news, and for another thing, how did I manage to survive a horrible plane crash and get home of my own power after only 3 days on the ground?

The plane crash started to feel more and more like a dream, something that had never really happened.  I kept looking for things that would indicate that it had really happened, and when they were all revealed to me as illusions, it was clear that I had simply dreamed it.

But i WANTED it to be true.  I acted like it was still true.

perimeter alarm sounded! [16 Dec 2008|12:07pm]
Someone tried to gain access to our house last night at 3am!

The housemate who lives on the first floor with us was awoken by the sound of the screen on his window being slid open.  It was warm, so the window was open.  Anyhow, he yelled and someone ran away.

What would have happened, if it had been -OUR- bedroom window?  Imagine if we had been sleeping soundly enough that he managed to get in without us noticing that he was opening the window?

I am picturing a ne'er-do-well stepping over the threshold of the window, putting his foot into a pile of hay in the guinea pigs' house,

and then getting stabbed in the neck by me.

What exciting times I live in!
